Catherine Ford was born in Bloomsbury, London; her father was absent from her family and she was raised by her mother, grandma and godparents. As a child, she battled an obsessive-compulsive disorder that caused anxiety due to word associations. Ford's love for acting grew in her early years. She joined in the National Youth Theatre. She gained admission to the Sylvia Young Theatre School, but after just a few days, decided that she was a poor for the school. Ford reapplied for admission to the Central School of Speech and Drama and, on her fourth attempt she was eventually admitted. Shaun Dingwall - who later played Pete Tyler in Doctor Who was also one of her classmates. Ford did not graduate in 1993. In 1991, however, Ford had made her first television appearance in a show called Surgical Spirit. At that point, Ford adopted the stage name Catherine Tate. Tate made her television debut in 1991, appearing on television shows like The Bill. Men Behaving Badly. as well as London's Burning. Also, she was a regular performer at the theater, ultimately joining the Royal Shakespeare Company for its 2000-2001 season. Tate gained not long after her recognition for her stand-up comedies, that were added to Tate's show in the year 1996.
